Driving in Florida can be very dangerous. Although you are at risk for being involved in an accident when you are driving in general, when driving in Florida you need to be extra cautious. Orlando can be a very busy city at certain times during the day and you need to always practice safe driving techniques. Sometimes people wonder why they need to practice driving and review safety tips when they have been driving for years. Our car accident lawyer at JGarcia Law Firm, P.A. wants you to know that it doesn’t matter how long you have been a driver for; accidents still happen on a daily basis. There is no way to completely avoid accidents because you cannot control other drivers on the road but if you follow the right safety measures and are educated on how to drive correctly, you can lower your risk tremendously. If you do not review the law frequently, we want you to know about Florida traffic laws regarding proper turns. Accidents caused by improper turns abound in Florida

What Is The Law?

If you intend to make a turn, you should consider the following Florida traffic laws:

  • Right turn- the approach for a right turn and a right turn should be made on the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway.
  • Left turn- The driver of a vehicle intending to make a left turn at an intersection should approach the intersection in the far left-hand lane lawfully available to traffic moving in the direction of travel. After entering the intersection, the left turn should be made so as to leave the intersection in a lane lawfully available to traffic moving in such direction upon the roadway being entered.

Tips For Making Proper Turns

You do not want to end up breaking the law because it can lead to serious consequences and large fines. In order to avoid making mistakes when turning, our car accident lawyer in Orlando has offered a few helpful tips:

  • Decide early on when you are making a turn. Never make a last minute turn because it is dangerous and can very easily cause an accident.
  • Move into the right lane as you are approaching the turn. The correct lane for a right turn is usually the right lane and for a left turn, you will want to stay in the left lane as you come up to the intersection.
  • Use your turn signal at least 1,000 feet before the turn which will alert other drivers that you plan to make the turn.
  • Slow down to a safe speed to make your turn and before you start to turn, look over your shoulder for pedestrians.
  • Finish your turn in the correct lane. If there are two left lane turns at an intersection, do not turn in one of them and end up driving in the other lane after making the full turn.
